Flowering Rush Operational Research Program Moves Forward

Flowering Rush is rapidly becoming a threat to waters in the Pacific Northwest.  This plant was first noted in the Flathead Lake, Montana system and has been steadily been moving downstream with known infestations now in North Idaho and Washington State.  Little work has been done on an operational scale to target this plant, but our team has been working to understand how to bring laboratory results into the field.

In our work with the Whatcom County (Washington) Noxious Weed Board, we have seen very good results with two different treatment technologies.  Reward herbicide has been used in Silver Lake for the past two summers with excellent results.

This summer we are supporting operational research trials on waters in North Idaho.  A combination of two herbicides is being used to replicate successful laboratory studies at the operational field scale.  These plots will be evaluated to see how these laboratory successes transfer to large lake and river systems.

We are looking forward to learning from these trials and bringing these technologies to bear on this major problem.
