AquaTechnex will be performing the first application of the new lake phosphorus sequestering technology Phoslock to a series of lakes in Southern California in October. This technology was developed by the Australian government to reset the ecological clock for eutrophic lake systems. Phosphorus pollution is responsible for the degradation of lakes throughout the world. This nutrient finds it’s way into waterbodies in a number of ways, primarily in runoff. Once in a lake, the nutrient fuels excessive growth of algae altering the ecosystem. As phosphorus levels increase, the algae species present in the system tend to shift from beneficial green algae species to Blue Green Cyanobacteria species. These Blue Green Algae species produce toxins that impact other aquatic organisms and pose a threat to human health to all that use these lakes.
Phoslock is applied to the lake surface and sinks slowly to the lake sediments. As it moves through the water column, Phoslock attracts and binds the phosphorus present in the water column. It then forms a seal on the lake sediments to prevent re-release of phosphorus from internal loading. AquaTechnex will be following a protocol designed by Phoslock. Water and sediment sample are used to calculate the phosphorus load of the lake and sediments. Application doses are then determined to target and sequester that amount of phosphorus. Ongoing monitoring will track the response in each lake and be used to document the effectiveness and longevity of the applications.
