Michigan Company may have invented way to stop invasive species

A company in Michigan has invented a novel approach to stopping the spread of invasive species in ballast water.  Many of these plants and animals that cause such major damage to our water resources travel across the oceans in ballast water.  Ocean going ships often take on water to help balance the weight of their cargo from foreign ports.  Organisms can be pumped into the ship with this water.  When they reach a new port such as in our Great Lakes or Western River systems, they discharge this ballast water, organisms and all.

The Michigan firm has patented the use of a yeast treatment for this ballast water.  The yeast consumes the dissolved oxygen in the water and would effectively suffocate any organism living in that water.  For more information read from this link:
